The Heritage & History of Middlefield Cheese
On July 4th, 1956 Hans Rothenbuhler made the first 250 pound wheel of cheese for the Middlefield Swiss Cheese Co-op. This was the fulfillment of a dream begun in his native Switzerland where Hans studied cheesemaking. Since that day, Middlefield Cheese has grown to be one of the largest swiss cheese manufacturers in the United States.
John Rothenbuhler, the couple’s son now heads the manufacturing with the same passion and commitment to quality as his father. There are several brands of this nutritious food...the range offers something for every palate and culinary creativity!
The Middlefield Cheese brands include:
- Middlefield Cheese - in Mild, Sharp and No Salt Added
- Jungfrau - a baby-eyed Swiss
- Aarafalls - a baby swiss
The founders, Hans and Ann Rothenbuhler worked as a team with Hans leading the manufacturing plant and Ann, running the retail store, now known as the Middlefield Cheese House.
